Australian Wine Clubs

A Brief History of Wine in Austalia

In the past 200 years, Australia has really made a splash on the wine scene of the world. Much of the world has embraced Australian wines as well. It’s not uncommon to come across a bottle in your local wine store proudly stating that it is from Australia. There are a number of good australian wine clubs to choose from if you are interested in getting better acquainted with the wine of this region. But first, a little history:

The wine making and wine drinking lifestyle is a relatively new way of life in Australia. They do not have the rich wine history that France and other parts of the world has. It’s not their fault, they haven’t even been around that long as a major country. However, in the 1700’s when settlers from England came over (criminals and unwanted members of England) they also brought along with them their passion for wine. Who knew criminals liked wine? With time, vineyards of substantial quality were cultivated, and wine became a more normal beverage of choice in the outback. (It goes good with various kinds of bush tucker)

The World Learns Of Australian Wine

In Australia James Busby is synonymous with getting the wines of Australia recognized on the world scene. He was the one who first introduced the world to Australian wine when he journeyed back to his home country in the early 19th century. He knew that Australia was the perfect place for making wine. The climate was sunny, the land arid, and the ground fertile. All the ingredients you need to make a great wine.

Soon, people started to demand more wine from this country, it became something of a fashion to drink foreign wines from other parts of the world. As demand for Australian wine grew, so did the production and quality and local love for wine as well.

Australian Wine of the Month Clubs

As love of wine grew in Australia, so did the local wine enthusiast clubs. The first wine club ever was the Australian Wines Consumers Cooperative Society Limited. A mouthful for sure, it was started in the 1950’s. Now there are over 50,000 members.

Since then many more wine clubs have emerged, both making and selling their own wines. These wine clubs usually ship the wine by the case to their members. Wine club memberships are often on a quarterly subscription, with wine being shipped in bulk.

Australia is a robust, young, and exciting country. These qualities are reflected in the wines they grow. If you are looking for a new experience, try joining an Australian wine club. We are sure you won’t be disappointed!
